May 2020 Minutes of the Dead Yeast Society

*editor’s note — this is a draft copy of the minutes. The recording of the meeting is being reviewed for accuracy and this post may be revised accordingly. Also, some topics have been consolidated into their first appearance rather than adhering strictly to the real-world timeline of the conversation because a structured meeting was not held and various topics came back up through the course of the discussion.

6:03 — Postponements – Jim

Gulf Brew

Jim advised that Megan Mod (sp?), Gulf Brew Organizer, informed him that the event has been pushed back to ‘sometime’ in October. She also requested viable dates for our club to participate.

David vs. Goliath

Red Rice Brew Crew has moved their June/July competition to October since the Good Time Brewer’s will not be holding their competition this year, normally scheduled for that month. They will of course let us know as we get closer when they settle on a date. If you are interested in submitting to the competition, visit the Bayou Circuit website for more info on the styles accepted so you can plan your brew.

6:05 — Summer Competitions – Powell & Tim

Powell asked if with the postponement of the David vs. Goliath, were there any other Summer 2020 competitions. Redstick Brewmasters still appear to be on schedule for August 8th with a July 24th entry deadline, though Adrien noted we’d confirm that with Keith. Adrien also noted otherwise, the next competition still on the schedule near then is the Robert’s Cove German Fest in late September.

Tim suggested an in-house competition (Club Brew-Off) with anonymous entries mailed to our experienced club judges for evaluation.

6:16 — Call for Gulf Brew Donations – Adrien

Adrien acknowledged that while commitments are tough without a firm event date, he asked who was still planning to try to donate to Gulf Brew this year and also mentioned that our early promises of beer from our March meeting would be followed up on to see if those members are still interested.

Beer Donation Commitments made in the meeting (≈70–80 gallons as of 5/5/20):

BrewerStyleGallons
Powell5
Pelican Brewing (Tim & Brian)possibly 20
NickLime Light Lager10
Boudreaux Brothers (Jim & Mark)10
BeerNutz (Adrien, Jeff, Tyler, Brian S.)1010, maybe 20

Tim offered that he and Brian would potentially do a demo this year for Gulf Brew.

6:33 — Local Businesses – Nick & Tim

Nick and Tim discussed how they’ve heard local breweries are hurting because while they can sell curbside, they have no distribution to restaurants and bars who are shutdown.

Jim mentioned that 20.3 says they miss us, and they are open for outdoor seating and of course drive-thru and delivery.

Secretary’s Note — Marcello’s is also still open for call-ahead curbside service. If you need home brew ingredients (or beer, liquor, wine) you can place an order and pick it up. See their website for contact info and details.

6:45 — Website Tech & Future Meetings – Adrien

Adrien mentioned he is investigating a self-hosted video conference option we can run through our existing server here at deadyeast.org so we can host our own online meetings and use for live streaming events.

Nick & Kent suggested Discord as an option due to the fact it now has video capabilities and the self-hosted option is free and easy to set up.
